Aquaculture is a source of food, critical and essential to feed humanity and to ensure the world’s food security, and, also is a business that generates economic interest. This is clearly specified in the analysis document of the State of Fisheries and Aquaculture FAO 2016, which exposes that “aquaculture will become the main driver of change in the fisheries and aquaculture sector“. Aquaculture is the productive industrial activity that will play a crucial role in providing solutions to the millennium challenges. Globally this is the main idea that exists under the MedAID EU Horizon 2020 project. Production and productivity of Mediterranean marine fish aquaculture, mainly seabass and seabream, are stagnating or growing slowly as a result of multiple and...

Etude économique de la crevetticulture dans la Province de Lampung - Sumatra ArchiMer
Bailly, Denis; Raux, Pascal.

Exploring Troubles, Attitudes, and Strategies Related to Integrated Aquaculture. A Case of the Andalusia Region (South of Spain) ArchiMer
Cavallo, Marianna; Frangoudes, Katia; Perez, Jose; Raux, Pascal.
With the adoption of the Maritime Spatial Planning, European countries have recognized the need to move towards multi-sectoral management of marine resources and space. The present study discusses the problems and opportunities associated with an integrated aquaculture development along the coast of Andalusia through an in-depth analysis of legislative documents and face-to-face interviews. The findings suggest that the management of the aquaculture sector has been characterized by a sectoral approach with little integration into the existing economic activities and socio-cultural context leading to conflicts among fisheries and lack of acceptance from local communities. During the last decade, the regional competent authority and the aquaculture sector...

GIS in support to data analysis for enhanced sustainability of shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam ArchiMer
Populus, Jacques; Nutpramoon, Raweewan; Martin, Jean-louis; Raux, Pascal; Auda, Yves; Son, Hoang.
Over the last twenty years, extensive shrimp aquaculture has dramatically expanded in the coastal fringe of the Mekong Delta. This occurred primarily at the expense of the mangrove, already severely affected by the Vietnam war. More recently, paddy land has been reclaimed for shrimp aquaculture, a higher currency earner. However, production collapses have frequently occurred and the overall yield has remained far below the expectations for traditional farming. A number of parameters enter into play in the success of this activity, summarized in two questions: i) is the Mekong deltaïc environment - under high continental pressure - suitable to shrimp farming, ii) if not, is it possible to adapt the low technicity of rural poor farmers to reach economic...

Is sustainable development a motor or a constraint for the professionalization of the pearl oyster industry in tahiti? ArchiMer
Rey-valette, Helene; Lacoste, Elise; Perez, Jose; Raux, Pascal; Gaertner, Jean-claude; Gaertner-mazouni, Nabila.
This article reports the results of a survey of the pearl oyster industry in French Polynesia territory. Its purpose is to examine the perceptions of the priorities for the development of this industry towards sustainable development. These perceptions were apprehended by a survey of pearl oyster farmers and other stakeholders of the sector (management authorities, scientists). After describing the methodological protocol of these investigations, it comes to confront the priorities chosen by professionals (i.e. pearl farmers) concerning sustainable development, with the perceptions of others stakeholders in the sector. Secondly it comes to build a typology of the priorities of pearl farmers concerning sustainable development. This analysis enables the...

Modeling economic vulnerability: As applied to microbiological contamination on the Thau Lagoon shellfish farming industry ArchiMer
Perez Agundez, José A.; Yimam, Eden; Raux, Pascal; Rey-valette, Helene; Girard, Sophie.
The economic impacts induced by the harmful effects of pollution or negative natural events are heterogeneous and depend on the event type and intensity, as well as the characteristic make-up of agents affected. This vulnerability analysis evaluates how each agent (or group of agents) is potentially affected by an external stress or event with respect to risk of exposure, sensitivity or intensity of subjection, and coping capacity of these agents in order to avoid or reduce its effects. Using a comparative formulation model, the aim of this paper is to quantifiably assess the vulnerability of shellfish farming linked to bacteriologic pollution. An analysis of the vulnerability concept and the construction of pertinent indicators are presented. The analysis...

Technological adaptation to harmful algal blooms : socioeconomic consequences for the shellfish farming sector in Bourgneuf Bay (France) ArchiMer
Perez Agundez, José A.; Raux, Pascal; Girard, Sophie; Mongruel, Remi.
The economic impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on the shellfish farming sector depend on their frequency, duration and intensity. Safeguarding storage and accelerated detoxification are technical solutions that could mitigate the effects of these events. This article first analyzes the economic feasibility of the technological changes that can be adopted by the shellfish farming sector in France. It then examines their associated social impacts. Finally, an application is carried out on the Bourgneuf Bay production area. The economic analysis addresses three issues related to HABs: (1) the economic performance of the shellfish farms in Bourgneuf Bay, (2) the costs of these new technologies, and (3) the economic viability of such an investment. Results...
